Mass Effect™ Legendary Edition: Normandy and Crewmate Upgrade Guide

A guide for the diffrent upgrades to the Normandy and it’s crew you can get by talking to each crewmember.

Normandy Upgrades

Advanced Mineral Scanner (Argus Scanner Array)

The Ayndroid Group’s proprietary Argus Planet Scan Technology has been integrated into the ship’s systems. This will greatly speed up the planet-scanning process.

Cost: 15,000 Iridium
Aquired by talking to Miranda

This upgrade will double the movement speed ot the scanner cursor when scanning.
This upgrade will not give any warscore in Mass Effect 3.

Recommendation: Recommended – Scanning for minerals is something you will be doing a lot of in mass and while you can do it without this upgrade it greatly speeds up the time to do so.

Extended Fuel Cells (Helios Thruster Tech)

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Engine refitted with Heed Industries-designed Helios Thruster Module.

Cost: 3,000 Element Zero
Aquired by talking to Samara

This upgrade will increase the normandy’s fuel capacity from 1000 to 1500.
This upgrade will not give any warscore in Mass Effect 3 and the fuel capacity does not carry over.

Recommendation: Recommended – Not as useful as it would’ve been in vanilla Mass Effect 2 due to the ability to buy rich ore planet coordinates for quite cheap from the shadow raider base after you complete the shadow raider DLC, but it does cut down on the ammount of times you need to go back and forth between systems to scan and the nearest fuel station.

Heavy Ship Armor (Silaris Armor Tech)

The asari-made Silaris armor upgrade is attached to the ship’s superstructure. This will help the ship hold together if hit by a blast powerful enough to penetrate its shields.

Cost: 15,000 Palladium
Aquired by talking to Jacob

This upgrade will prevent Jack from dying during the approach part of the suicide mission.
This upgrade will give 25 warscore to the Normandy in Mass Effect 3.

Recommendation: Strongly Recommended – this upgrade is mandatory for the “No One Left Behind” Achievment, also saving Jack’s life will make her a 25 point alliance war asset in Mass Effect 3.

Med-Bay Upgrade (Dermal Regeneration)

Upgrades the Normandy’s medical facilities with an advanced dermal regeneration unit. Using this unit will immediately and completely heal your scars. Further scarring will not occur regardless of the actions you take.

Cost: 50,000 Platinum
Aquired in an email after Mordin is recruited

This upgrade will remove any scars made from Renegade choices
This upgrade will not give any warscore in Mass Effect 3.

Recommendation: Not Recommended – This upgrade is purely cosmetic, and in addition to that due to the fact that Paragon choices already heal scars makes it comepletly useless for them, at 50,000 Platinum this makes it the most expensive upgrade in the game and you’re better of spending them anything else, since all the other upgrades in the games has atleast some gameplay benefit.

Modular Probe Bay (Probe Booster)

Normandy Exploration Upgrade

Cost: 15,000 Iridium
Aquired by talking to Thane

This upgrade doubles the probe capacity from 30 to 60.
This upgrade will not give any warscore in Mass Effect 3 and the probe capacity does not carry over.

Recommendation: Recommended – Unlike the fuel upgrade this upgrade is still just as good here as in vanilla Mass Effect 2, since travelling between planets in a solar system does not consume any fuel meaning that you don’t need to worry about running out of it. Meaning you don’t need as much back and forth when you’re mining a solar system.

Multicore Shielding (Cyclone Shield Tech)

The rapidly-oscillating kinetic obstructions of Cyclonic Barrier Technology (CBT) are added to the ship. This should help the ship survive blasts like those that destroyed the first Normandy.

Cost: 15,000 Palladium
Aquired by talking to Tali

This upgrades prevent one of your crewmates from dying during the approach part of the suicide mission in the following order Kasumi > Legion > Tali > Thane > Garrus > Zaeed > Grunt.
This upgrade will give 25 warscore to the Normandy in Mass Effect 3.

Recommendation: Strongly Recommended – Mandatory for “No One Left Behind”, also surviving crewmates will often become war assets in Mass Effect 3.

Thanix Cannon (Particle Cannon)

⠀⠀⠀⠀

The turian-designed Thanix Magnetic-Hydronamic Cannon is now installed on the Normandy. This cannon is powerful enough to destroy a Collector Ship with repeated hits.

This upgrades prevent one of your crewmates from dying during the approach part of the suicide mission in the following order Thane > Garrus > Zaeed > Grunt > Jack > Samara/Morinth.
This upgrade will give 15 warscore to the Normandy in Mass Effect 3.

Recommendation: Strongly Recommended – Mandatory for “No One Left Behind”, also surviving crewmates will often become war assets in Mass Effect 3.

Crew Upgrades

Note: None of these upgrades give any warscore in Mass Effect 3.

Subject Zero Biotic Boost (Multicore Implants)

Jack’s vital signs show progressive neural degeneration, which would normally decrease her potential ability to generate mass effect fields. Instead, her ability appears to be increasing. Replacing the power module in her bio-amp with a higher-capacity prototype module would dramatically increase the strength of Jack’s biotics.

Cost: 3,000 Element Zero
Aquired by talking to Jack

This upgrade gives a 20% biotic damage boost for Jack ONLY.

Recommendation: Recommended (if you use Jack) – This will mainly boost Jack’s shockwave ability which is quote strong.

Mordin Omni-tool (Custom Tech Upgrade)

Mordin built his own omni-tool and can make significant upgrades given the proper materials.

Cost: 3,000 Element Zero
Aquired by talking to Mordin

This upgrade gives a 20% tech damage boost for Mordin ONLY.

Recommendation: Recommended (if you use Mordin) – Good damage boost for his incinerate, just keep in mind that tech explosions aren’t a thing in Mass Effect 2.

Krogan Shotgun (Custom Claymore)

Armory scientists produced a single prototype for Grunt in violation of Council space’s weapon safety standards. The recoil on the Claymore is enough to break a human’s arm; fortunately, Grunt isn’t human.

Cost: 15,000 Platinum
Aquired by talking to Grunt

This upgrade gives the Claymore Heavy Shotgun to Grunt ONLY.

Recommendation: Recommended (if you use Grunt) – The M-300 Claymore deals the most damage of all shotguns in the game (with the exception of a fully chargered Geth Plasma Shotgun) having a base damage of 50.1 (400.8) and a +25% bonus damage to health, shield and armour. This is also the same shotgun you can pick up in the collector base if you play as Soldier or Vanguard.

Geth Sniper Rifle (Custom Widow Rifle)

With enough raw resources and access to the armory lab, an advanced sniper rifle compatible only with Legion can be produced.

Cost: 15,000 Platinum
Aquired by completing Legions loyalty mission

Recommendation: Maybe – While the Widow Anti-Material Rifle is the strongest sniper rifle in the game with a whopping 368.3 base damage and a 50% bonus against armour you get Legion so late in the game, and to add the fact you need to complete his loyalty mission means you basically can only use it on the suicide mission and any dlc mission you didn’t finish before hand.
