Looking for a furry companion to brighten up your grim, post-apocalyptic cabin in Road to Vostok? The “Missing Cat” side quest offers just that, but be warned: this seemingly simple mission is a grueling test of your survival skills and preparation. This guide will walk you through every step to successfully rescue the cat and bring it home safely.

Core Preparation & Quest Start
- Prerequisite: This quest only becomes available on Day 4 of your playthrough. Until then, focus on looting, stockpiling supplies, and securing your base.
- The Challenge: This is an endurance run. You will travel across multiple maps (Village -> School -> Outpost -> School -> Village) in a single trip. Each map transfer drains your hydration and energy, and if you die at any point, you must start the entire journey over.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gear Up in the Village Before embarking, visit the Generalist trader. Stock up on:
- Food & Water: For sustained energy and hydration.
- Mental Restoration Items: These are rare; buy them if available.
- Medical Supplies: Especially splints and painkillers (though the Doctor sells them cheaper). Ensure your inventory has at least 3×5 slots free and 1KG of weight allowance for the cat carrier.
From your cabin, follow the train tracks to the Village hub. Hug the right side of the map past the lake until you find a road. Follow it right to the Transfer sign leading to the School area.
Step 2: Navigate the School Area Upon entering:
- Be cautious of bandits near the small building to your right.
- Loot cars (check driver seats) for potential weapons. Head straight, cross the bridge. The large yellow building on your left houses the Doctor NPC. He charges high taxes (starting at 200%) but is a crucial source for affordable splints and painkillers—buy some if needed. To exit, find the main road past a bus station and a lootable car. Follow it to the Transfer sign for the Outpost.
Step 3: Locate the Cat in the Outpost This is a dangerous, open area. AI enemies have long sightlines.
- Immediately upon spawning, hug the right-side border of the map and move forward.
- You will eventually see a small hill with an entrance to an underground bunker. Important Note: The cat can spawn in any of the three bunkers on this map, not just a specific one. Check them all. Inside the correct bunker, you’ll hear meowing. In a room to the left, find a small well covered by planks. At the bottom is a black cat in a cardboard box. Interact with the well to rescue it.
Step 4: The Return Journey You must retrace your steps. There is no direct route from Outpost to Village.
- From the bunker, hug the left side of the Outpost map back to the transfer point.
- Return through the School area. Revisit the Doctor if you need healing.
- Cross the bridge, enter the Village transfer, skirt past the lake, and follow the train tracks home to your cabin.
Step 5: Welcome Home Inside your cabin:
- Place the Cat Box from your inventory onto the floor (do not drop it).
- Wait a few seconds. The box will open automatically, and the cat will become a permanent cabin resident.
- Feeding Your Cat: The cat needs food every ~36 hours. It will eat Cat Food, Tuna, Meat, or Perch. Simply store these items anywhere in your cabin; you don’t need to hold them. (Sadly, you cannot pet the cat at this time.)
Crucial Tips & Warnings
- One Continuous Trip: You must complete this in one session. Exiting the game outside a Safehouse counts as death. Tip: On the Outpost map, a tent on the spawn side (go left hugging the border) counts as a Safehouse for logging out.
- Medical Priority: Always carry proper Splints. Fractures are common and lethal within minutes. DO NOT use Improvised Splints—they are currently bugged and useless.
- Map & Loot Behavior: The entire world resets when you re-enter a map. All loot refreshes, and any items you leave on the ground or in containers will despawn. You cannot “store” loot outdoors.
- Constant Vigilance: Enemy spawns are not permanent. Bandits can respawn in areas you’ve already cleared, even behind you. Stay alert at all times.
