If you’ve just downloaded Taskbar Hero and feel a bit overwhelmed by all the systems and menus, you’re not alone. This idle RPG has a lot going on under the hood, but once you understand the basics, it becomes a relaxing and rewarding experience. Let me walk you through everything you need to know as a new player.
What Is Taskbar Hero?
Taskbar Hero is an idle RPG that runs in the background while you do other things on your computer. Your characters keep fighting enemies, collecting loot, and progressing even when you’re focused on work or browsing the web.
One thing you should know upfront: this isn’t a game with instant gratification. Progress is slow and steady. You’ll improve your characters over time, unlock new features gradually, and enjoy watching your account grow. If you’re looking for a game where you get massive rewards every five minutes, this might not be for you.
Choosing Your Starting Class
When you start a new game, you’ll pick one of three free classes:
- Warrior
- Wizard
- Archer
Later on, you can unlock the other classes for a small cost, so don’t stress too much about your first choice. There’s also a Priest class available through a free DLC, which is worth grabbing if you want to try something different.
My personal recommendation for beginners: Start with Archer or Priest, then pick your third class based on what sounds fun. I personally play Wizard most of the time, but I think Warrior is the easiest class to learn the game with.
Your First Few Hours
Once you start the game, your heroes will automatically move around the map, attack enemies, and use their skills. You don’t need to control them directly. Your main job is to manage what they find.
The core loop works like this: your characters defeat enemies, earn gold, and randomly find chests as they move through different zones.
Chests Are Your Best Friend
Chests contain equipment for your heroes, and during your first few hours, they’re your main way to improve stats. Early on, you’ll need to click each chest to open it manually. This might seem tedious, but don’t worry – you’ll unlock automation tools later that handle this for you.
Your early goals should be:
- Open every chest you find
- Equip any upgrades you get
- Keep pushing forward to unlock new features
- Save gold and resources for future upgrades
Don’t overthink your decisions in the beginning. Taskbar Hero is designed to be played at a relaxed pace.
Understanding the Menu System
Inventory
Each class can only use certain types of equipment. Hover over any item to see:
- Item name
- Required class
- Level requirement
- Stats
- Sell price
During your first few hours, focus on collecting equipment. You’ll use it later for upgrading through other systems.
Equipment comes in different rarities:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Beyond
- Legendary
- Divine
- Cosmic
- Celestial
- Arcane
Formation
This is where you manage your heroes and pets. You can:
- View all your characters
- Change their position in the group
- Set up different formations for different strategies
- Check each hero’s skills
Even skills you haven’t unlocked yet will show up here, which helps you plan which hero to develop.
Stash
Think of the Stash as your storage room for important items you don’t want to carry in your main inventory.
What I recommend keeping:
- Decoration materials
- Crafting materials
- Soul stones
- High-level equipment you can’t use yet
- Valuable items for future upgrades
For example, if you find a really high-quality piece of gear but don’t have the level to equip it yet, toss it in the Stash. I know it’s tempting to sell it for gold, but these items are usually worth more in the long run.
What you should sell: items you know you’ll never use. If you don’t play Warrior and you keep finding warrior-only swords, sell them.
Stats
Here you’ll find all your hero statistics:
- Damage
- Defense
- Health
- Speed
- Special bonuses
- Available skill points
You can spend skill points on general stats or on specific abilities for each character.
Runes
This is one of the most important systems in the entire game. Runes are a huge network of permanent upgrades that improve almost every aspect of your account.
You can upgrade:
- Damage
- Armor
- Movement speed
- Experience gained
- Gold earned from the Cube
- Chest drop chance
- Hero slots
- Stash capacity
- And much more
My recommended priority order for beginners:
- Hero Rune
- Skill slot for all heroes
- Auto-open common chests and boss chests
- Cube gold increase
- Cube experience increase
- Chest drop chance
- Gold from defeating enemies
- Hero experience
- Combat stats
- Stash upgrades
If you want to make the game more idle-friendly, move the automation upgrades higher on this list.
The Cube
The Cube is one of the most complex systems, and it deserves its own section below. For now, know that from here you can:
- Upgrade equipment
- Sell items
- Craft equipment using materials
- Place decorations
- Remove decorations
- Modify item stats
- Manage most of your account progression
Portal
The Portal lets you travel between different zones. You can go back to earlier acts to farm specific materials, find particular equipment, or complete unfinished objectives. Using the Portal efficiently becomes important as you progress.
Diving Deeper into the Cube
The Cube has its own leveling system separate from your heroes. While your heroes gain experience from fighting, the Cube levels up independently and unlocks new features as it grows. Higher Cube levels also give you benefits like more gold and access to higher-level equipment.
Synthesis
Synthesis lets you combine equipment to get higher-quality pieces. The rule is simple: 9 items of the same tier become 1 item of the next tier up.
This will be one of your main ways to progress once you start collecting lots of gear. Don’t automatically sell everything – save items for synthesis.
Alchemy
Alchemy lets you sell items for gold. It starts as a simple shop, but over time it becomes one of your biggest income sources. The gold you get depends on:
- Rune upgrades
- Your Cube level bonuses
- Equipment tier
Higher-value items mean bigger payouts.
Crafting
Crafting lets you make equipment using materials you find during your adventure. You can choose what to craft, but there’s an important exception: main weapons and secondary weapons give random results. You might need to craft several times to get the weapon you want.
Decoration
Decoration lets you apply gems to your equipment for stat boosts. These can give you a lot of extra power. There’s no perfect combination for everyone – it depends on your class and play style. The good news is you can remove decorations later if you change your mind.
Removal
Removal lets you take gems off equipment. Important: you won’t get the materials back. So save your best gems for gear you plan to use for a while.
My Advice for New Cube Users
Don’t stress about optimizing the Cube perfectly in your first few hours. Use it mainly for:
- Upgrading gear through Synthesis
- Earning gold through Alchemy
- Crafting a few needed pieces
- Learning how each system works
As you progress, the Cube will become the center of your account progression.
Using the Portal to Progress
To move to the next act, you need to reach the end of the current map. There you’ll find the boss portal, but you’ll need a Soul Stone for that act to enter.
Don’t worry about losing your Soul Stone if you fail. It only gets consumed when you actually defeat the final boss and complete the act. You can try as many times as you need.
Bosses are usually tough on your first attempt. If you can’t beat one right away, just keep improving your gear, leveling up, and strengthening your character. You’ll get there eventually.
Final Thoughts
Taskbar Hero is a game about slow, steady progress. Don’t rush it. Focus on opening chests, equipping upgrades, and learning the systems one at a time. The Cube will become your best friend once you understand it, and the Rune system will make your account stronger over weeks and months of play.
