Valheim 1.0: How to Get the Grappling Hook and Craft It at a Workbench

I spent way too long squinting at yellow-slime towers before I finally pulled a Hook out of an Infested Mine chest, and honestly the Grappling Hook was worth every dead Soldier along the way. This one is for anyone who has pushed into the Mistlands in 1.0 and wants the new mobility toy without wasting hours guessing where the parts drop. If you are still early in your world, this guide is not for you yet — the Mistlands sits deep in progression, and you will get flattened before you get the recipe. For everyone else, here is the whole chain: what the tool does, where each material hides, and how to assemble it at a plain workbench.

What the Grappling Hook actually is

The Grappling Hook is one of the standout additions in Valheim’s 1.0 update, sharing the spotlight with the Deep North content. The good news: you do not need a special forge or a new station tier. Once you have the pieces, you craft it at a regular workbench.

Everything you need — the hook itself and every ingredient — comes out of the Mistlands biome. No cross-biome shopping trip required.

The full crafting recipe

Here is the exact list to copy down. Nothing here is optional, and the counts are fixed.

  • 1 Hook
  • 4 Mandibles
  • 10 Eitr
  • 10 Eitr Silver Wood

Where each piece comes from:

Material Source Requirement
Hook Chests in Infested Mines (Mistlands) Find the secret rooms
Mandibles Drops from Soldiers Kill Soldiers in the Mistlands
Eitr Extracted from certain trunks Mistlands exploration
Eitr Silver Wood Grows all over the Mistlands Black Metal Axe to chop

That Black Metal Axe requirement is the one people trip on. If you cannot chop the silver wood yet, you are not ready for this craft.

Where to find the Hook

This is the step that stalls most players, so let me be blunt: the Hook only exists in the Mistlands, and it only shows up inside secret dungeons called Infested Mines.

Inside those mines, Hooks spawn in the secret little rooms. Look for small sigils on stones — that is your visual tell that you are in the right kind of space. If luck is on your side, you will find a Hook in one of the chests.

Because Hooks are rare, this matters a lot for groups: if you play with friends, be the point person. You might only find one for a good while, and you do not want to split the search across four people who all miss the same room.

How to locate Infested Mines and grab Mandibles on the way

Infested Mines are scattered through the Mistlands. The entrances sit inside some of the black marble towers, and those towers are easy to pick out — unlike the others, they are covered in yellow slime and gunk. If a tower looks gross, check it.

While you are out there hunting entrances, kill Soldiers to bank your Mandibles. You need four, so start collecting before you ever find a Hook.

Note: The Mistlands is far into the game. If you are new, do not go searching early — follow a Beginner’s Guide first and come back when your gear can take a hit.

How the Grappling Hook feels in your hands

The Grappling Hook pulls you along, vertically or horizontally, as long as it can get purchase on something. The reach is pretty far, which makes it genuinely fun for traversal.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • It eats quite a bit of stamina, so watch that bar before you commit to a long swing.
  • While you are dangling, doing nothing makes you slowly descend.

Pressing the jump button pulls you back toward the hook point. That little interaction is the whole skill ceiling — descend to reposition, jump to climb.

Is it mandatory? No. But it is genuinely useful for the vertical dungeons in the end game, and it pairs nicely with the new Deep North Guide territory if you are planning a full 1.0 tour.

A quick word on 1.0 inventory space

Since you will be hauling Eitr, silver wood, and Mandibles around, it is worth knowing that 1.0 adds two extra inventory rows through legitimate progression — no mods needed. That takes you from the default 4 rows up to 6, for 16 extra slots.

Both upgrades come from the trader Haldor after specific boss kills:

  • wider pockets — 1,000 gold, available after defeating the Mountains boss
  • deeper pockets — 2,000 gold, available after defeating the Mistlands boss

Haldor spawns randomly as you explore; the first spawn point you find becomes your trader for that world. He tends to stock new items after each boss, so check back regularly.

Tip: If you want a bigger bag before your Mistlands run, grab wider pockets early. It makes the Eitr Silver Wood farming loop far less painful.

My honest take

Build the Grapple Hook if you are already living in the Mistlands — the materials are all local, the workbench requirement is trivial, and the vertical mobility in end-game dungeons is a real quality-of-life bump. Just do not expect to stumble into it. Find the slimy towers, clear the Infested Mines, watch for sigils on stones, and check every chest. The Hook is in there somewhere.
