Big Walk Map Guide: How to Find the Map & Unlock the Big Views Achievement

You spawn into Big Walk with no map, no fast travel, and a red tower on the horizon that looks important but explains nothing. Getting to the actual map — the room that unlocks the Big Views achievement — takes a specific sequence of totems, keys, and key cutters that isn’t obvious from wandering around. This guide lays out that exact path, start to finish, so you’re not backtracking across the map three times because you missed a key cutter.

Overview: The Map as Item and Location

The word “map” does double duty in Big Walk. It’s a location you physically walk into, and once you’re there, it’s also an item you can read and use. You need both halves working before you can navigate efficiently — plan routes, track what you’ve finished, and locate backpacks, radio stations, and red totems scattered across the world.

Finding the map location is also how you unlock the Big Views achievement. There’s no separate hidden trigger — reaching the map room is the achievement condition. Everything below is aimed at getting you there with the fewest wasted trips.

Prerequisites: Clearing the Starting Area and Collecting Red Totems

Before any of the tower or key-cutter steps matter, clear the puzzles in the starting area. That’s the gate that opens up the wider map — nothing else unlocks until it’s done.

Once that’s cleared, start hunting red totems (sometimes just red items) tied to puzzles scattered through the starting area and its immediate surroundings. Collect five of them and you’re rewarded with a key. This is the key that gets the whole map sequence moving.

Tip: Backpacks are relatively easy to find in this early area. If you’re struggling with totems specifically, sweep the starting zone again — most of what you’re missing is probably right there.

Step-by-Step: Reaching the Map Location

Once you’ve got your key from the five totems, follow this sequence:

  1. Head toward the red tower. From the starting area, it’s the biggest thing on the skyline — hard to miss and impossible to confuse with anything else.
  2. Confirm your five red totems are collected before you commit to the tower climb. You need that first key in hand.
  3. Climb to the very top of the red tower area. A second key is waiting up there, similar in function to the totem key.
  4. Bring this key to the five key cutter points placed around the area. Key cutter 4 and key cutter 5 are the ones that matter most for finishing the sequence.
  5. Cut the key at each cutter as you work your way back toward the starting area — this is a gradual process, not a one-stop shop.
  6. After key cutter 5, a blue tunnel appears. Walk into it. This leads directly to the room housing the map.
  7. Slot the key into the designated socket to open the map room itself.

Warning: Skipping ahead to key cutter 5 without hitting the earlier cutters in order won’t work — the key needs each cut applied before the tunnel appears.

The Map Room: Physical Map and Scale Model

Getting into the room is only half the payoff. Inside, you’ve got two distinct tools that serve different purposes:

Tool What It Shows Best Used For
Scale model Starting area, flags over completed locations, radio station positions, all backpack spots Scouting unexplored zones, planning your next route
Physical map + compass Zoomed-in subsections, current subsection label (top right) Coordinate-based puzzles (north/south/east/west)

The scale model is the closest thing this game has to a full-map overview. Completed locations get a flag on the pole; unfinished ones show a bare pole with no flag, so you can tell at a glance what’s left.

The physical map with the compass works differently — clicking it zooms into specific regions, but it will not show your current position on the map. You have to cross-reference the subsection label in the top right corner to figure out where you actually are relative to what you’re looking at.

Tips & Troubleshooting

  • The map is required for finding every remaining collectible and for locking in the Big Views achievement — treat the trip as priority one, not a side errand.
  • If you’re playing with friends, use the scale model together to divide up unexplored zones and cross off missed backpacks or radio stations.
  • Coordinate puzzles need the physical map, but don’t expect it to track you live — it only zooms and labels subsections.
  • Struggling to find red totems? Go back through the starting area more carefully. Backpacks and other early items sit out in the open there more than people expect.
  • There’s no fast travel and no slide mechanic right now, so getting between key cutters takes real time. Movement mods may eventually add speed options, but as of now, budget for a slow walk back and forth.
