Mortal Shell 2: How to Unlock Fast Travel Early (A Step-by-Step Guide)

Backtracking in Mortal Shell 2 is the single biggest momentum killer in the early game. Every death sends you trudging through the same corridors, and the map’s verticality makes even short trips feel like expeditions. I found the solution in the Mether’s Breath item — and unlocking it before level 10 changes the entire pacing of the game. Here’s the exact route I used to get fast travel operational before the first major boss.

Quick Answer

Fast travel requires the Mether’s Breath item, which costs 8 Ova deposited at the Gloom Siphon Machine in the Merrow Keep hub.

  • After the prologue: 3 Ova are already deposited.
  • Collect the remaining 5 by cleansing these beacons:
  • Blackreach Pass Beacon — 1 Ovum
  • Mushroom Village Beacon — 1 Ovum
  • Nocturn Gate Beacon — 3 Ova
  • Return to Merrow Keep and deposit all 8 to unlock Mether’s Breath.

I completed this run at level 8 (the screenshots show level 13 because I leveled up during the route).

Why Mether’s Breath Is the Real Fast Travel Key

The game doesn’t tell you this directly: fast travel isn’t a menu option you unlock by progressing the story. It’s tied to a specific item — Mether’s Breath — which also lets you cleanse corrupted areas on the map.

This dual function is why I prioritize it so early. Corrupted zones block access to certain Shell locations, including the Grimoire Shell, which I found locked behind one of these areas. Without Mether’s Breath, you’re not just missing fast travel — you’re missing entire chunks of the map.

The Gloom Siphon Machine in Merrow Keep is the only place to deposit Ovum. After the prologue, three are already in the machine, so the real work is tracking down five more.

The Ovum Route I Used

I mapped this route to minimize enemy encounters and avoid areas that require higher-level gear. All three beacons are accessible at low level, and I cleared them in roughly 40 minutes.

Step 1: Blackreach Pass Beacon

Head to the Blackreach Pass area, which sits between the Widow’s Overlook Beacon and the same region’s main path. The beacon is visible from the approach — you don’t need to fight anything to reach it, though a few stragglers may aggro.

Cleansing this beacon grants 1 Ovum.

Step 2: Mushroom Village Beacon

From Blackreach Pass, I made my way to the Mushroom Village. This is a shorter detour, and the beacon is positioned near the village’s central structure. The enemies here are slow, so I could cleanse the beacon without much resistance.

Cleansing this beacon grants 1 Ovum.

Step 3: Nocturn Gate Beacon

The big one. Nocturn Gate grants 3 Ova for a single cleanse, which makes it the highest-value beacon on this route. It’s also the furthest from Merrow Keep, so I saved it for last — that way I only had to make one return trip to the hub.

Tip: I did this run at level 8 with basic gear. If you’re struggling with the enemies near Nocturn Gate, use the environment to funnel them — the narrow approach paths make it easy to isolate single targets.

What Fast Travel Actually Unlocks

Once I deposited all 8 Ova and unlocked Mether’s Breath, the quality-of-life shift was immediate:

Feature Before Mether’s Breath After Mether’s Breath
Travel between discovered locations On foot only Instant
Access to vendors and hub Manual return Instant teleport
Cleansing corrupted areas Locked Available
Shell locations behind corruption Inaccessible Reachable

The Grimoire Shell is the standout example. I confirmed that some Shell locations are gated behind corrupted areas, and Mether’s Breath is the only way through. If you’re aiming for specific builds early, this is the unlock that makes them possible.

Note: Killing story bosses also grants Ovum, but that requires significantly more story progress. The beacon route is the fastest method I found.
