The Wild Game Update is a free content drop arriving on September 22, 2026. It runs on every platform that supports the Oxbow map, and the legendary animals appear on both available maps. A paid Hunting Set DLC launches on the same day, and the Exquisite Set DLC gains new winter clothing. Both new and existing saves are supported, so nothing forces you to restart.
This article covers where legendary animals spawn, how the trophy loop works, how long a full collection takes, and whether the new legendary gear is worth the hunt.
What the Wild Game Update Adds
The free update introduces 15 legendary animals. Each one has a matching wall decoration, and each one can be turned into a weapon or clothing piece if you own the Hunting Set DLC. The DLC itself contains 4 weapons and 11 clothing items, for 30 collectible elements in total.
| Content | Type | Released With | Requires DLC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Legendary Animals | Free update | Wild Game Update | No |
| 15 Wall Decorations | Free update | Wild Game Update | No |
| 4 Legendary Weapons | Paid DLC | Hunting Set DLC | Yes |
| 11 Legendary Clothing Items | Paid DLC | Hunting Set DLC | Yes |
| New Winter Clothing | Paid DLC | Exquisite Set DLC | Yes |
Where Legendary Animals Spawn
Legendary animals are not random wanderers. They stick to specific grounds that suit their nature — deep forest, quiet riversides, and similar terrain. Each animal has its own fixed spawn point.
Those spawn points never appear on the map. The animal spawn filter does not reveal them either, so you cannot shortcut the search with map tools. If you are still learning the lay of the land, a solid Map Guide helps you narrow down likely habitats before you start walking.
How Many Legendary Animals Are Active at Once
Every season introduces four legendary animals. Each one remains active for up to five seasons unless you kill it first.
- Maximum legendary animals on the map at any moment: 8
- In an existing save, the first legendary animals appear after the next season change
- In a brand new game, the very first season has no legendary animals at all
Editor Warning: Do not start a fresh save right before you plan to hunt and expect animals immediately. You have to play through season one and wait for the season change before a single legendary animal exists on the map.
The Trophy Loop, Step by Step
- Find and kill a legendary animal.
- Skin it to receive a trophy.
- Decide what to do with the trophy — see the options below.
A trophy uses the same model as its matching wall decoration. From your inventory you can use it directly to create a wall decoration, or take it to the Smithy or Sewing Hut to craft the corresponding weapon or clothing item. Crafting consumes the trophy, because the materials are part of the recipe. Trophies can also be dropped from your inventory if you want to clear space.
Editor Warning: A single trophy cannot become both a decoration and a weapon or clothing piece. The craft eats the trophy. If you want the wall decoration and the gear for the same animal, you need to hunt that animal twice.
Do Legendary Trophies Affect Mood?
Yes. A Legendary Trophy placed as wall decoration inside a house counts toward the limit of 20 decorations per house that affect mood.
Hunting the Same Animal More Than Once
Legendary animals behave like bandits and map loot. Once you have killed one, it can spawn again in the same location during a later season. Nothing is permanently gone.
This matters if you want both the decoration and the weapon or clothing tied to the same animal, since you need duplicates. Farming one animal repeatedly is possible, but it costs extra time and extra hunts.
How Long Does a Full Collection Take?
There are 15 trophies. Under perfectly lucky conditions, collecting all of them takes a minimum of four seasons.
If you also want duplicates of every trophy to craft the full Hunting Set — 4 weapons and 11 clothing pieces — the minimum climbs to eight seasons. In real play both numbers stretch out, because which legendary animals spawn is random. There is no way to force a specific animal to appear.
Legendary Weapon Stats vs. Base Game
The legendary weapons are genuinely strong. Their damage sits at or above the best base game options, and durability is their real selling point. The numbers below compare each legendary weapon to its best base game counterpart, with the base game value in parentheses.

| Weapon | Durability | Damage | Base Game Comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary Wolf Knife | 3840 (960) | 65 Slashing (50) | Far higher durability |
| Legendary Pigeon Spear | 2000 (200) | 80 Piercing (75) | Ten times the durability |
| Legendary Eagle Bow | 3000 (Recurve 300 / Longbow 200) | 45 Piercing (Recurve 30 / Longbow 40) | Best damage and durability of any bow |
| Legendary Perch Crossbow | 3000 (400) | 65 Piercing (55) | Major durability gain |
The Legendary Wolf Knife and Legendary Pigeon Spear gain the largest durability jumps, which makes them excellent long-term tools for players who hate repairing gear. The Legendary Eagle Bow beats both the Recurve and the Longbow on every stat line, so it replaces either bow outright.
The 15 Legendary Clothing and Weapon Items
The Hunting Set DLC contains 15 craftable items. Every piece is crafted at the Smithy or Sewing Hut using a legendary trophy.
| Item | Category | Crafting Station | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary Eagle Bow | Weapon | Smithy | 3000 durability |
| Legendary Pigeon Spear | Weapon | Smithy | 2000 durability |
| Legendary Perch Crossbow | Weapon | Smithy | 3000 durability |
| Legendary Wolf Knife | Weapon | Smithy | 3840 durability |
| Legendary Wisent Jacket | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |
| Legendary Lynx Boots | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |
| Legendary Duck Hat | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |

| Legendary Deer Loincloth | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |
| Legendary Boar Hat | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |
| Legendary Bear Boots | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |
| Legendary Pike Trousers | Clothing | Sewing Hut | Cosmetic only |
Editor Warning: Every clothing item is strictly cosmetic. None of them give skill bonuses, stat increases, or special effects. Craft them for looks, not for power.
DLC Saves and Co-op Rules
The Hunting Set DLC works on both new and existing saves, on both maps. You do not need to restart anything.
Co-op access follows the host:
- If the host owns the DLC, every player in that session can access the DLC items.
- If you own the DLC but join a game where the host does not, the items are unavailable to you in that save.
Editor Warning: Own the DLC but planning to play with a friend who does not? You will lose access to your legendary gear in their save. Check who is hosting before you commit to a shared world.
If you plan to chase all 15 legendary animals, a working Skills Guide helps you build a hunting character before the update lands, and a Tools Guide covers the equipment you need for long tracking runs.
Conclusion
The Wild Game Update rewards patience more than speed. Learn the habitats, accept that spawns are random, and plan your seasons around the eight-season mark if you want every single item. The legendary weapons are worth the effort — the clothing is there for the screenshots.
